This drawing was executed in circa 1905. A preparatory study for the etching titled “Elbzille mit Kettenschlepper”, 1910 (Dube 120 ), it is one of a small group of Elbe landscapes and views depicting the Port of Hamburg (Dube 119, 122, 123). A pen-and-ink drawing, also titled “Elbzillen” (1910), is held in the Brücke Museum in Berlin (see “Die ‘Brücke’. Zeichnungen, Aquarelle, Druckgraphik”, Berlin and Stuttgart 1992, no. 17).
